This collection contains two promissory notes to hire slaves, one from Edward Martin to Mrs. Mary K. Hopkins and the other from B.E. Meade to Dr. A. Hopkins. Two letters, written during the Civil War, from George Hopkins to Joe Hopkins and from Erasmus Hopkins to Joe Hopkins, contain news of a march to and from Fredericksburg on little food, Erasmus' detailing as assistant superintendent to build a dam, and inquiries into conditions at home. A third letter from Major N.R. Fitzhugh to Capt. George Hopkins encloses a receipt and a form to be filled in [not included] to pay for beef.
